Health Revolution - Part 2 [Unfinished, previously unpublished]

The Histamine Segué

In my previous post, I explained how I'd found wonderful, unexpected, relief from the worst of my CFS type 'fatigues', by excluding certain foods. I went into a lot of detail about the specifics of food intolerance testing, and histamine intolerance, but did not cover most of the possible underlying mechanisms.

Problems with histamine tie in with the following:
Methylation cycle insufficiency/disfunction.

My Nutritionist considers that HIT may be due to gut damage leading to DAO insufficiency, and/or dysbiosis with opportunistic bacteria producing histamine and other unhelpful by-products.

Histamine problems common in methylation deficiency, as SAMe used by HNMT.

Nutritional therapy

Super-foods:
- Milk (cow's) - 81-89% water, the rest split equally 3 ways: fat, protein (80% casein), carbs (mostly lactose - 40% of milk calories), vitamins, minerals, bacteria and white blood cells.
- Egg
Coconut

Phoenix Rising
Longcity, etc, bio hacking

+ Ray Kurzweil (food pyramid diagram)

Patrick Holford (G.I. lists)

That optimum nutrition, low heart output hypothesis for CFs

Also starts to fit in a load of little indicators I'd been throwing at doctors for years. Link my couple days of hypomania after the first time of taking 5HTP:

And my generall pale-ness, lack of tanning (apparently L-tyrosine, a dopamine pre-cursor, is used as a tanning pill too!)

Conventional Advice

http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2012/11/ubiome/

Gene therapy would/will(!) be great, straight up fixing all those pesky SNPs that are currently considered immutable. I think some level of gene therapy is going to be needed  for fully integrated machine-brain interfaces; programing neurons to be fully receptive to (fiber-optic) light (and maybe glow, or something. But the safety trials for that kind of thing will be horrendous! And even then there's no way (litterally) to predict all the knock-on effects of adding in genes; since the geneome looks increasingly like a zip file with the sequences coding for multiple different genes [??], unpacking like proceedural programming code.

Manipulating your symbiotic organisms seems far safer, by comparison.
"The human microbiome has been linked to autism, depression, and anxiety as well as many gut disorders, eczema, and chronic sinusitis. Unlike gene therapy as a medical solution for some genetic disorders, manipulating the microbiome is a bit easier, through solutions such as simply introducing healthful probiotic cultures into the system." - Wired {http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2012/11/ubiome/}

Poo transplants

With Ventner's creed, etc, we already have most of the expertise to engineer (perfect) symbiotic gut bacteria. They would be the first nanomachines inside us, since bacteria have a well proven tract record, compared to your typical, sci-fi, blood-borne vehicle.

+ Too costly:
{picture of all my supplements lined up}

Organic farming
Supplements & testing
Inaccessible to those most in need! What initiatives can be set up to jump the health/money band-gap?

+ Soylent - will currently be nutritiously terrible, but has great potential for personalisation, when able to be mixed cheaply on demand.

--------
Possible explanations for why diet fixed/caused my CFS type problems:
  • Histamine opposes adrenaline - causes hypo-tension, (broncho-constriction; hypoxia - Mariska). Would explain why exciting sports were OK once moving lots.
  • Nutritionist: food reactions just use up a lot of 'energy'.
  • Mitochondrial cycle insufficiency (due to missing nutrients, co-factors) - Yasko/CFS thing.
  • My (old) hypothesis: DOA insufficiency > high serum histamine > HNMT upregulation > low brain histamine (behind histamine impermeable blood brain barier). OR, (my) H3 receptor neurons are not protected from serum histamine by BBB.
  • Orexin neurons (in hypothalamus) sense inflammatory markers from food/histamine reactions (lowering wakefulness/motivation boosting output, as in narcolepsy). Again explains why fun sports overcame this.

--------
TL;DR:
http://www.allergyuk.org/allergy-statistics/allergy-statistics
  • Food intolerance may affect 45% of the population, causing a surprisingly wide variety of easily fixable, idiopathic symptoms, throughout the body. Non-CD gluten intolerance maybe 6.4%.
  • Histamine intolerance may affect as many as 1 in 10.
  • Gut bacteria balance almost certainly has a huge effect on general health and mental illness/well being. There's great interest and rapid progress in filling out the details. Pro-biotics and dietary changes can already tweak this balance, but it's not reliable.
